Portraits

Through drawing and painting people I attempt to honestly describe something of what it means to be human. People are constantly changing. There is the knowable and the unknowable. Perceived, reflected and remembered moments, partially discernible, are layered forming a tangible presence. There is a quality of timelessness. I strive to reflect something of the time in which we live whilst revealing elements of the past upon which the present is built.

The landscape of the face reveals specific journeys. Though looking beyond the surface, I am also fascinated by surface details, and the instability of physical layers. Body language describes personality, as do personal objects through their associations. I consider still life works to be portraits without sitters.

Portraits for me are a process of recording presence, whilst also an emotional interaction.

Commissions for single or group portraits in pencil, watercolour or oils are undertaken.
